THE WAIMEA.
' (FEOM THE WAIMEA CnBONICLE.) Nothing very important has occurred in mining matters during the week. •The returns from the claims on Scandinavian Hill were very large, and the fldiggings on the Western side of the (second terrace yield a fine sample of jgold. A rush to a terrace near Piper's Flat presents nothing of importance to at present. The old diggings are as steady as ever, and the population of the right hand branch of the Waimea Creek increases weekly. The news from the Pakihi rush not being so good as it was expected it would be, has induced many miners who were oscillating between an intention to go there and an intention to remain in the Waimea district, to settle down to work that gives them good wages. At SCANDINAVIAN HILL most of the claimholders have employed themselves during the week in washing up their stuff. Peterson and party for four and a half days' working and washing, obtained IGB oz. of the yellow metal. From Landahl's claim nearly 100 oz. were obtained last week ; and many other claims have given from 50 oz. to 60 oz. during the present week. On the second lead mining operations are being carried on with vigor, and two tunnels are being taken in from the gully with good prospects. Several of the claims on this lead give three and four dwts. to a dish. On the other terraces, nothing new is there to record. The terrace between German Creek and the second Scandinavian Terrace is turning out well, ar,d a very fine sample of gold is obtained. One of the prospectors sold his share to a holder of the adjoining claim for LI OO. In some claims a narrow seam of gold is found, and this is very rich. In places there are six feet of washdirt; but in such cases the ground is not so rich. A head of water has been obtainedfrom arace on the 1 second terrace. On the flat at the bottom of the terrace lately rushed, several holes were sunk during the week, but in two or three only were payable pros.pects obtained. There is a probability of the lead found in this terrace beingtraced to another terrace on the western side of Scandinavian Hill, and ifc will be well prospected in a day or two The claims bottomed in PRETTY WOMAN'S TERRACE continue to give good yields. Several other holes would have been bottomed by this time, had not the heavy fall of rain last week prevented the working of them ; as it is there will be nothing fresh to give until next week. On BALLAKAT HILL everyone pursues the '• even tenor of his way," ami good wages, and in some instances much more than that, arc obtained b)' the claimholders. The digging on FIND LAY'S TERRACE is profitable work for those miners on the lead, and about 100 men are doing exceedingly well. On piper's flat the population increases and spreads itself daily. There is now a very large number of men on the ground, the most of whom are doing well. Some parties obtain from L2O to L3O a week each man, and very many get from L 6 to LI 2 a week. A
