THE TOTARA.
(feom: the boss guabdian) If we state that our population has perceptibly diminished during the past fortnight, by departure's for the (Buller) Pakihi, aud that our fortnightly escort keeps up to the same amount, about 3300 ounces, we shall have summed up
our mining news. It is well known — indeed, evident — that the bulk of the miners arc well satisfied, and only those who were not getting wages here have gone away, probably to return wiser men. From Okarita we have news to the 4th. At that time nothing new had been discovered. The so-called rush of the Lagoon was a total failure. Curtiss' tunnel claim is abandoned, the ground not being found remunerative. The Morning Star Company are again troubled with water, and intend trying a steam engine and pumping machinery. A seventh share in Meyer and Co.'s claim, Jones' Flat, deep sinking, has boon sold during the week for LI OO. This is a great advance on its value a few week's back. A new mining scheme has been started, to be called the Baud of Hope Company. They have applied for seven acres of the flat next the Scandinavian, and as no objections have been recorded, they will no doubt obtain a lease. The Scandinavian Company are getting up their engine and pumping machinery. As an evidence t of the cost of operations here, this machinery has cost in Hokitika close on to LIOOO, and a very considerable sum will be outlayed before the machinery is in work. I From Donoghue's we hear that new ground has been taken up between Donnelly's and Clevi Water Creek. Scaulan aud White are bringing in races.
