The " Baily Southern Cross" reports :—: —

The trade both of merchandise and timber to Hokitika and the Grey, which has been so- brisk •of kite, has, within the last week, considerably fallen off, that market havingr been supplied. The slock of timber in our own market notwithstanding the cessation of export, is not yet, however, beyond demand.

There is mo change in brcadatuffs ; Chilian slone occupies >£he market, tit the rate of Ll9 per ton . Small quantities of wines and spirits )>ave been disposed of at auction ; but otherwise only a retail business is being done, and whiskey Is quite tinsaleable, Ale and Btout, of good brands, is selling at from 12s. to 12s 3d ; Inferior, 10stol0s6d.

The harque Qlencoe has arrived from Eobart Town, with 4,000 posts and rails, and 44,000 palings, which will keep the market supplied for a time.

Messre Arthur and Son held a trade sale today of wines and spirits, for which the following prices were obtained — Bottled ale, 4s 3d to 5s 9d per dozen, pints: stout, 6s per -dozen, pints ; Hennessy's brandy, in cases. £4s per dozen, three dagger brand, 503 per dozen; half-casks, in bond, 3s 9d per galloa ; oat of bond, 15s per gallon ; geneva, 53s per gallon ; old torn, 30s per dozen ; whiskey, 33s 6d per dozen ; champagne, 43s per dozen; port, 37s per dozen; sherry, ]9s 6d to 21s per dozen ; assorted syrups, 33s per case ; sperm candles, light weights, Bfcd per lb.
