NELSON.

The " Examiner" of the 11th instant has the : followingwith reference to the local markets, in .its Commercial Summary for Europe :—: —

Iv first'hands, stocks in Nelson of every kind 'are moderately ■well supplied, with the exception ■of provisions — such as bacon, hams, butter, cheese— which are exceedingly short both here and in all the colonial markets. The demand for provisions of this kind is unusually large on ■the West Coast, owing to the total absence of live stock in that part of the country and the ■difficulty of meeting the demand there. In prices but little -change has taken' place. An ■exception to this nwist be mentioned as regards •flour, which has advanced within the last few •days to L 25 .per ton, with a probable further •rise, as be3t Adelaide is now selling In Melbourne at L 26. The great rise that has taken place in the price of dour in Australia is said to be in -consequence of the prospect of a bad harvest Ihrough want of rain. We have seen such a •prospect denied in the Adelaide papers, while they admit that stocks of grain and flour are running low. Whatever the 'cause, however flour in the principal markets in Australia has suddenly advanced nearly 20 per cent, in price, ■which, when all other provisions are unusually clear and employment is not very plentiful, must be a serious thing to the great body of the ■working classes. The stock of flour in Nelson at this moment is not very large, and further imiwrts will be necessary before harvest.
