COMBINED HUNTS MEETING AT HAWERA PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY Several years ago the Taranaki and Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Clubs came to an agreement to hold their two days’ racing as a combined meeting at the New Plymouth Racecourse, generally on a Thursday and Saturday. This centralisation proved popular with owners, trainers and racegoers, and the meetings have proved increasingly popular. This season the clubs, following the 50 per cent, cut in racing days, have to be content with one day, and the meeting is being staged to-day at the Hawera Racecourse, the course at New Plymouth being required for other purposes. For one thing, this arrangement is more convenient for those enthusiasts from Wanganui, who will be able to travel to the course by train. With heavy rain recently in Taranaki the track is certain to be on the heavy side, but reports are that it is in good order. Betting will be on the win-and-place system. Two races have been divided, but it is likely that scratchings will obviate the necessity for divisions in the Waverley Hack Handicap. The principal events are the Halcombe Memorial and the Stratford Handicap, the former run over nine furlongs and the latter over six furlongs. The Combined Hunt Cup has attracted an excellent field and there is also a nice field in the Ladies’ Necklace. Whackie was scratched for the Stratford Handicap at 10 a.m. yesterday. The following may appeal m their respective engagements:— 11.45: Hack Hurdles.—Trig Station, Pekoe. Majority. 12.25: Wereroa Stakes. First Division: Bright Gesture. Peter’s Choice.
