FATHER CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING SON

SALT ALLEGEDLY RUBBED INTO WOUNDS ORDER MADE FOR MEDICAL EXAMINATION | Per Pres. Association.l AUCKLAND, Fen. 28. A frail boy, aged 13, who wept continuously, was a pathetic figure in the Police Court, when his father, Noah Gilbert Hopkins, motor-lorry driver, pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting him. The police said that besides thrashing the boy Hopkins got his other boy to bring salt, which he rubbed in the wounds. The police admitted that Hopkins had been having trouble with his boys, but said it was a very brutal kind of assault. Replying to the magistrate, Hopkins said he did not want the boys to get into prison. "If it is going to make them any better you can give me as many years in gaol as you like.” The magistrate remanded Hopkins until Friday and ordered that he be medically examined.
