LAID TO REST

LATE MR. A. E. ROWLEY IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL AT TAIHAPE (Own Correspondent) TAIHAPE, Feb. 28. All branches of the railway service were represented at the funeral of the late Mr. A. E. Rowley, which was held at Taihape on Monday afternoon. An impressive service was held at St. Margaret’s Anglican Church, after which the hearse left for the Taihape cemetery followed by a long procession of cars. The last sad rites were performed by Rev. J. C. Abbott, vicar of Taihape. The pallbearers were Messrs. F. Christensen (St. John Ambulance), F. C. Mollett and J. Griffen (Railway Locomotive Branch), S. V. Kiddie (Railway Traffic), F. Ball (Railway Clerical Department), L. Tomlinson (Oddfellows’ Lodge). Amongst the large number of mourners present were the stationmaster (Mr. J. D. Davis), locomotive foreman (Mr. D. Munro), Messrs. W. A. Edwards and M. R. McGuinness (chairman and secretary respectively of the E.F. and C.A.), H. Holmes and C. F. Dunn (vice-chairman and secretary respectively of the A.S.R.SJ, R. D. Mayson, H. C. Arthur, and S. H. Pryor (Oddfellows’ Lodge), George King (W.E.A.), G. A. McLean (Taihape branch of N.Z. Labour Party), W. Currie (secretary Taihape Railway Picnic Committee).

The lodge burial service was read by Bro. H. C. Arthur. Many of deceased’s relatives attended the funeral. The large number of wreaths and floral emblems placed at the graveside, bore silent but eloquent testimony to the memory of a popular railwayman whose tragic death has cast a gloom over the district.
