THE CARBINE BLOOD
IMPORTATION OF SALEVE SPION KOP HORSE FOR TARANAKI STUD. Taranaki breeders and owners will be particularly interested in the latest arrival from England in the thoroughbred sire Saleve, which has been brought to Patea by the young studmaster. Mr. Syd. McGreal. who already has Illumination available for breeders. Saleve has been landed in wonderful conditions and is one of the most handsome and evenly-built horses seen in the province. He is a son of the Spearmint horse Spion Kop, and is therefore a direct descendant of the famous Carbine, sire of Spearmint. Saleve was retired to the stud in 1936. after a most successful career on the flat and over hurdles and has left progeny in England. His dam, Skein Dhu. was by Battleaxe from a mare by Lestorlin. Skein Dhu left many other winners in Swordsrrian, Scotford. Claymore, and Mary Arden, which raced so successfully in India. The mare by Lestorlin was a famous matron, also leaving Amethystone (winner of £6362 and Bruff Bridge (£5822), also Lady Earn, Quarryman, and Conde. The arrival of Saleve recalls the successes of Rockfel, one of the greatest fillies on the English turf last season. She was sired by Felstead, a son of Spion Kop, both of whom were Derby winners. For owners of Campfire mares there is now an exceptional opportunity of returning the family strain, and by Saleve the Carbine blood should produce stock of outstanding value.
