WAIMARINO SHOW

BRILLIANT EVENT ALL RECORDS BROKEN (Own Correspondent). RAETIHI, Feb. 27. Bright sunny weather favoured the opening of the 29th. annual Waimarino show at Raetihi on Saturday a crowd of 5000 attending. Gate receipts reached a record total of £194 compared with £l4O and £132 in 1938 and 1937. The St. John Ambulance Brigade were in attendance. In the stock sections the entry of sheep was of a high standard but the cattle entries were poor, reflecting a lack of co-operation from farmers. The horse section proved to be the best in Waimarino for many years and entries were numerous. A spectacular event was the wood chopping competitions, such axemen as W. E. Jones, T. Jones, A. J. Hughes and Hal Sealetti. Steer and calf riding events were also well competed. Home industrial entries were of high quality but the flower and vegetable section was not so heavy as last year.

The show was officially opened by Hon. Frank Langstone, M.P., who meted out high praise to the president (Mr. A. Scarrow) secretary (Mr. J. H. Mcßride) and committee for producing a show which by its variety of genuine attractions was a fixture as brilliant as any staged by much larger towns and districts.

The day was suitably wound up by the show dance at the Druids’ Hall, Raetihi, in the evening, when the trophies were presented.
