WAITOTARA NEWS

w.u.r.V. ivjLJEjr.xiiNU (Own Correspondent) The first meeting of the year was heid in the hall supper-room last week. There was a good attendance of members and several visitors, in the absence of the present, Mrs. Haitwell (vice-president) presided and extended a welcome to all. After the singing of the New Zealand Anthem and the reading of the Creed the minutes and report of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. It was decided to buy some article needed for the W.D. rest room, the price not to exceed £3. It was alsc decided to donate £5 to the community chest. Other business was dealt with and then an amusing competition was held, Mrs. Hartwell being the winner with Mrs. Warner second. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames Leahy, Connor, Olsen and Mahoney. Mrs. White (Wanganui) gave a most interesting demonstration on making a bridal arm-sheaf, and Mi. Cox showed how to make wire wall baskets for the growing of bulbs or other flowers. A vote of thanks to Mr. Cox and Mrs. White, also to Mi. Richards, who kindly motored them out to Waitotara, was carried by acclamation. For the best sponge sandwich Mrs N. Verry was awarded first prize, with Mrs. Handley second and Miss Wilson third. For scones, Mrs. J. J. Hurley was first, Mrs. Gubbins second and Mrs. Laird third. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Willis, who acted as judge. Competitions for the March meeting (which will be the last before the annual meeting) will be for best vase of flowers and shoulder spray.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE There was not a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ngarauru Women’s Institute which was held in the hall supper-room. The president presided, the meeting opening with the New Zealand Anthem. The usual business was dealt with, the minutes of the previous meeting being read and confirmed. The hostesses for afternoon tea were Misse* J. Davis, A. Sullivan and Heremiah. Competitions were for best singlebloom. Mrs. Davis being Ist and Miss Heremiah 2nd; for hospital box, Miss Heremiah was Ist and Mrs. Davis 2nd. A vote of thanks to Mrs. Laird, who kindly acted as judge, was carried by acclamation. An enjoyable meeting was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. EUCHRE PARTY The results of the Ngarauru W.l. card evening were as follows: Mrs. Apou Ist, Mrs. Davis 2nd, Mrs. Sullivan 3rd. Gents: Messrs. Bob Taiaroa Ist, Tapa Noema 2nd, John Rangi 3rd. PLUNKET CARD EVENING The first of a series of flag 500 evenings was held in the hall a pleasant time being spent. Mrs. M. Grove and Miss V. Verry and Mi. Dobie and Me. Mogridge were at the winning table. The proceeds are in aid of the local Plunket branch.
