MARTON BOROUGH AFFAIRS
COUNCIL MEETING HELD (Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Feb. 23. A meeting of the Marton Borough Council was held this evening in the Council Chambers, the Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) presiding. Also present were Councillors G. B. Gregory, K. A. Williams, T. Barton, A. A. Mclndoe, A. p. Howard, W. J. Mogridge and W. G. Winehcombe. The Marton Jockey Club wrote with reference to the proposed tarsealing of the area immediately fronting and around the totalisator at the racecourse, asking the council’s cooperation in submitting an estimate of the cost of the work and if favourable, requesting that the borough foreman and his staff carry out tne work.—The council agreed to let the borough foreman and staff carry out the work as suggested. A letter from the secretary of the Rangitikei Cricket Association was received asking the council's consent to the removal of a tree situated on the south side of the cricket ground, which at present interferes with visibility conditions; also requesting that the gorse fence between the cricket ground and the borough property be removed and a wire fence erected, stating that the association is willing to meet its share of the costs. —The council agreed to remove the tree and gorse hedge -and erect a boundary fence on the terms suggested. The secretary of the Rangitikei School Sports Association applied loi permission to use the Marton Park on Wednesday, March 8, for the combined sports meeting, and permission to make a charge at the gates.— Granted.
The Western Rangitikei School applied for use of the baths on fuesdays and Thursdays for instruction. Use granted once a week (Thursdays).
An' application was received from the manager of the Christian Convention for use of the Town Hall on Eastern Sunday, April 9, 1939, for an after church service to commence at 8 p.m—Granted, subject to payment of charge to cover expenses. A circlar letter from the Commissioner of Transport, was received, stating that the New Zealand Road Safety Council al its quarterly meeting in March, will consider proposals as to whether or not it is in the interest of road safety to impose ’.estrictions on the use of motor-cycles. —lt. was suggested that the present regulations were adequate if enforced, but if that proved ineffective speed restrictions should be imposed. The town clerk, Feilding, wrote enclosing a copy of the minutes of a meeting of representatives of loco authorities in Zone E at Feilding on February 16, 1939. —Received. An application from the hon. secretary Marton Volunteer Fire Brigade, asking the council to make a grant towards the expenses of the team ol four men and delegate attending the demonstration to be held in Wanganui on March 3,1939.—1 t was deeiaed to contribute an additional subsioy to the brigade.
