TAIHAPE SCHOOL COMMITTEE
MONTHLY MEETING HELD. PHYSICAL DRILL DISPLAY ON MARCH 2. The monthly meeting ol the Taihape School Committee was held on Monday evening when there were present Messrs. W. Berridge (chair). W. L. Paterson, J. A. Mortland, C. F. Dunn, W. Jurgens, Dr. H. M. Hay, the secretary (Mr, J. A. Graham) and the headmaster (Mr. J. C. Whibley).
Apologies were received from Rev. E. T. King and Mr. L. H. Haydon. It was decided to grant the school a whole holiday on show day (Thursday, February 23). The date of the school ball was tentatively fixed for May 4 and the secretary was deputed to book the hall Headmaster Congratulated. The chairman complimented the headmaster and his staff on the high standard of efficiency at the school as indicated by the examination results, and added that it was pleasing to note that seven out of eight candidates had passed the matriculation examination, and that all the Taihape candidates for admission to the Teachers’ Training College were successful. The headmaster thanked the chairman for his remarks. The committee approved of the appointment of Mr. Roy Sanders to the staff of the school in place of Mr. N. J. Finlayson, as notified by the Wanganui Education Board. The Rangitikei A. and P. Association was granted the use of the High School building on show day to house the home industries. The board wrote agreeing to the erection of a retaining wall and raising of the fence line in Hula Street so as to prevent the school ground from being flooded with storm water. The Taihape Borough Council wrote advising that it would erect the wall and raise the footpath. Headmaster's Report. The headmaster’s report read as follows:—The school reopened with a roll number approximately the same as last year. The secondary department last year failed to qualify for a new grade and an additional teacher by one pupil. The present roll in the High School is 120. We require 121 on March 1 to be entitled to an additional permanent assistant. It is doubtful whether we shall reach that number or not. Unfortunately we lost to outside schools a number of boys from Form 11. This is a pity as an additional teacher means greater freedom in arranging courses of work, etc., for the pupils. Owing to the generosity of the Swimming Club, about 80 pupils are being taught how to swim. They receive instructions daily. A display of physical drill is being prepared by Mr. D. Revell, a member of the staff, for Thursday, March 2. Six new typewriters have been provided for the commercial classes, and the Board has approved of the hiring of a hall as additional accommodation, until new rooms are built. This will provide proper quarters for the commercial classes who will no longer have to do much of their work in the corridor. The report was adopted.
