PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK

SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ DAY BIG PROCESSION TO-DAY To-day: Opening clay of the Wanganui Jockey Club's race meeting. At night: Big physical fitness procession and display, through main streets and |on Cook's Gardens. I To-morrow: Primary Schools’ Day. Demonstration on respective school (grounds. j A record crowd is expected to attend to-night's celebration. Units in lhe procession are to report to the chief marshal (Colonel F. K. Turnbull) in lower Victoria Avenue, at 7 p.m. sharp. The procession will move at 7.30 p.m. and the route will be via the Avenue and Guyton Street to i Cook’s Gardens. Some amendments have been made to the programme of athletics and cycling. The 100 yards race will now Ibe the 120, and 400 will be a mile flat. Athletic and cycling events are I to be on the basis of a love of sport, land there will be nn trophies or 'prizes. The programme has been timed to finish about 10.15 p.m., but should anything unforeseen occur the tramway services will wtiit to accommodate the suburban people. To-night’s Programme When lhe Pipe Band display has finished on Cook’*= Gardens to-night, and all units are in position, a march past, directed by the chief marshal (Colonel F. Turnbull) and assistants will take place, headed by the Queen Alexandra Band. The whole assembly on the oval will then, at the command of the marshal, move forward to line in front ot dais from which the Mayor Mr. W. J. R.ogers and Mr. J. 18. Cotterill M.P. will speak. Units taking part, in later displays will stand ' fast while other units headed by the iTechnical College platoon march off ithe oval in succession through the 'exit on the Wilson Street side. The Regimental Band will play while the I units march off. I Details of the programme are I Drum-major's display by the Wanfganui Highland Pipe Band; march l past; remarks by the Mayor Mr. W. |.J. Rogers and Mr. J. B. Cotterill. Im.P.; team games chariot races, and Flamborough sword dance. Girl Guides; Highland dancing by Miss V. Healy's pupils; health and beauty exercises by Miss Matthew's pupils; tumbling by Y.M.C.A. juniors; cycling, one mile, by Wanganui A.A. and C. Club. Horn’ Pipe by Miss Healy's pupils; fencing display by the Wanganui Sword Club; human pyramids by the Y.M.C.A. secondary classes; athletics, 120 yards event by Wanganui ' A.A. and C. Club; bridge-building and 'display by Boy Scouts: apparatus iwork by Y.M.C.A. men's class; hakas, poi dances, songs by the Maori party; [grace and rhythm by the Y.M.C.A. i women's class; baseball demonstration [by the Wanganui Baseball Association ; 1 mile flat race and three miles cycle race by the Wanganui A.A. and !c. Club. ! Members of the women's basketball teams are to assemble at Queen's Park School to-night at 7 o'clock. Yesterday’s Observance Physical Fitness Week was observed yesterday in the secondary schools of the city. There was folk dancing and drill at the Girls’ College, parents and friends of the girls attending. At the Collegiate School a cricket match was played between the School XI and a team from Hawke's Bay fielded by Mr. A. S. Wilder. The first half of the Technical College swimming sports was held at the Gonville baths and there was appropriate celebration by the Convents. Boys of the Marist Bros. School showed keeness in an unofficial display on Cook's Gardens.
