FINAL GALLOPS

Wanganui Candidates’ Last Work-Out CUP CONTESTANT’S MILE RIDING ENGAGEMENTS Little fast work was done on the Wanganui tracks yesterday morning in preparation for the autumn meeting, but there were one or two interesting gallops by visiting horses. The majority of the local horses had done their final work-outs on Tuesday and were let off with pace-work of varying degrees.

Perhaps the most interesting gallop was that in which Brazen King figured, as the Australian-bred horse promises to be one of the favourite division in the Cup. With K. Chote in the saddle Brazen King ran a mile in lmin. 46 2-ssec., the last six taking him lmin. 20sec. He will be ridden by G. R. Tattersail in the Cup. Red Witch pleased by covering five furlongs in 64sec, continuing at halfpace for another circuit of the course proper, on which Brazen King’s gallop also was done. Baran, who is expected to contest the two-year-old race on Saturday, pleased very much in a spin over four furlongs with his stable-companion, Lord Midas, the pair taking a shade over 50sec. Lord Midas is engaged in the Juvenile Handicap to-day. The Westmere Hack Hurdles candidate Lady Stella ran a solid six furlongs in lmin. 21sec, doing it nicely. Though she has not raced over hurdles she won the Otatara Highweight at Napier Park and must be given a good chance over the battens, especially as veteran trainer V. H. Colello generally has a good jumper in his stable. Red Rufus and Morning Flight were companions in a spin over six furlongs in lmin. 18 3-ssec. Both appear to be very fit and it would not surprise if either was returned a winner on the circuit. The Koatanui-bred Parquet, trained at Takanini by C. Morse, traversed seven furlongs in lmin. 32sec. Parquet is to run in the Cun, and the distance should not be difficult for her, as she is by Limond from the English mare Inlaid. Several visitors arrived during the day including Little Dorrit from Waipukurau. Jockeys and Their Mounts. The following riding engagements have been announced for the Wanganui meeting:— S. T. EDWARDS: Entail, Pretty Lass, War Lap, Darthura, Life Guard, Pearl of Asia, Amatory. B. H. MORRIS: The Bigot, La Bru, Laughing Lass, Ecstatic, White Gold. G. R. TATTERSALL: Brazen King, Dissipation, Phil, Royal Huntress. W. J. BROUGHTON: Rustem. H. N. WIGGINS: Siegmund, Veldette. S. ANDERSON: Ruling Star. O EVANS: Taitoru <Flying Handicap), Golden Orchid. W. JENKINS: Little Dorrit. J. K. REYNOLDS: Amoroso. H. J. CALLAHAN: Le Marquis. H. FRYER: Resinguard. L. H. CLIFFORD: Te Huia. J. FORSYTH: Tiger Gain, Lady Drake, Sporting Gift. R. W. McTAVISH: Submission. W. J. McDOWELL: Hanover. J. CHAPLIN: Warehi. P. JARVIS: Entheos. Further Scratching, Dynasty was withdrawn from the Juvenile Handicap at 4.30 p.m. yesterday. This makes five horses scratched since acceptance night, Ihe others being Beaupartir, Aussie Ra, Brazil and Chevychase on Tuesday. Trophies For To-day. Two trophies will be at stake today, these being the £5O gold cup which goes to the winner of the Wanganui Cup, and the silver tea service which goes to the winner of the Juvenile Handicap. The Cun trophy was presented by Mr. T. Currie to mark the 50th. occasion on which he has seen the Wanganui Cup run. The trophy for the Juvenile Handicap was presented by Messrs. James Buchanan and Co. In President’s Colours. March Easy, who has sported silk on one occasion only, will carry the colours of the Wanganui Jockey Club president, Mr. H. M. Speed, in the Kai Iwi Maiden to-day. She finished fifth, close up, in her first outing, which was at Ashhurst last month, and that experience should have bene- | filed her. March Easy is a three-year-old brown daughter of Nightmarch and that brilliant Elysian—Civilisation mare Civility,’ one of the best sprinters and milers of her day in the colours of Mr. Speed, with sucesses on most of the metropolitan courses, including the Auckland Easter. At the stud Civility has been an unlucky mare, and it remains to be seen if March Easy can turn the tide.
