AUTUMN MEETING FIELDS

INTERESTING RACES ASSURED REVIEW OF THE PROSPECTS In spite of the fact that defections have reduced the Wanganui Cup field materially, there should be an interesting contest to-day, when this long-distance event will be decided at the Wanganui Jockey Club's autumn meeting. The fixture will be concluded on Saturday. The betting at the meeting is single-pool, and a review of the fields may be of interest to readers:—

WESTMERE HACK HURDLES. < >f £150: one mile four and a-quartcr furlongs) Entheos has an excellent record and he should be the favourite. Hanover showed at Ashhurst that he goes well when fresh. Red Rufus won well at Woodville in December. Don Erma may be held safe by the younger division. Lady Stella has not won over hurdles but she has shaped like a proficient jumper. All Spirit is reported to be an unlikely starter. Warehi has won at Wanganui, and may make good over the battens. Doctor Defoe appears outclassed. The favourite trio may be: ENTHEOS, HANOVER, RED KI FL'S. JUVENILE HANDICAP. .Of £175; including trophy; five furlongs.) Submission appears to stand out, for she is a well-performed filly. Many hold that she would have been a place-getter in the Wellesley Stakes. She has been doing all that has been required of her on the tracks. Varimond scored nicely at Woodville on Saturday, and is improving. La Bru has not raced as much as the others, but she has been consistent, and impressed when winning at Trentham. Military Maid may be outclassed, though she is a smart and uieful filly. Allez has a reputation for speed, according to Marton track-watchers. Lord Midas may surprise and Royal Huntress is a promising Austra--1 an-b’.cn filly. A win for any of the others would surprise, and backers may declare for SUBMISSION, LA BKI, VARIMOND. KAI IWI MAIDEN (Of £150; six furlongs.) Only four of the nine carded have finished in a place. Fiancee has disappointed her connections on several occasions. Le Marquis impressed at Hawera as likelv before long. Little Dorrit shaped promisingly at Bulls in October. Ruling Star was fourth at Woodville and should be an early winner. Darthura promised to be an early winner when she showed up at Waverley in her first start. Dissipation and the Australian-bred Royal Lassie may be in the picture. Summing them up, investors may place most trust in LE MARQUIS, DARTHURA, RULING STAR. VICTORY HACK HANDICAP (Of £200; one and a-quartcr miles.) Mataroa, who heads the handicap, impressed favourably when he won at Pahiatua ano Woodville, securing a double at the latter fixture. He is still well placed to continui the run. Dark itagle has developed into a really good colt, and he might have been a trifle unlucky in the Nolan Hack Cup at Hawera. Amatory has been shaping well on the tracks, and a win would put him out of hacks. Red Witch comes from Hawke's Bay with a reputation oi being particularly smart, and she has earned her place in the handicap. Morning Flight is bred on both sides for speed and should be hard to beat. Mischel has been consistent in her three starts to date and two or three others are improving. Lady Hoariri is likely to start in the Tayforth Hack. Three that appeal are:— DARK EAGLE, RED WITCH, .MATAROA. WANGANUI CUP of £650. including £5O cup: .1 mile 4} furlongs) It remains to be seen whether Wotan can sustain his consistent record on the Wanganui course, for two of his few successes have been registered here. He is a proved stayer. Brazen King also has a good record on the Wanganui track, for he has won here the Bris'.ol Cup, the Empire Handicap and the Wanganui Cup Hast year). He looked well at Hawera and galloped well yesterday. Taitoru is consilient but it is stated '.hat his mission will be the sprint. Siegmund, a winner at Woodville last Saturday. must be one of the fancies, even though a doubt has been expressed regarding his ability to handle a turning course. The Bigot impressed at Marton and also at Trentham. He can stay the distance, as he was third in the Manawatu Cup a year ago. Tiger Gain is getting on in years, but Rustem and Winsome I.u have shaped liked handicappers in the making. If Entail runs up to his track performances he must have a good show. Parquet’s record is a useful one, but one comes back to THE BIGOT, BRAZEN KING, SIEGMUND. TAYFORTH HACK HANDICAP i Of £150; seven and a-quarter furlongs.) This field is one of the smallest of the day. Joe Louis was in good form last season but appears to find it difficult to stage a come-back. Te Huia has not won in two seasons. War Lap has been consistent this reason and his form al Hawera suggests that he will be hardest to beat. White Gold made a great impression here in her lirst win, but disappointed until winning at Woodville last Saturday. Lady Hoariri will be making her first appearance this seasoti. Haile Selassie has not had much success, and backers may prefer: WAR LAP, WHITE GOLD. PETRE HACK HANDICAP (Of £150; six furlongs.') This is a better field, both in numbers and quality. than in the other hack events. Red Cat, who is nearly out of hacks, has plenty of weight now, but she is a smart mare and the turning track should suit her. The smaller field in the Tayforth Hack may appeal to 'he connections of Joe Louis. Ecstatic i: a brilliant beginner and that should stand to her here. Trebor was a winner at this meeting last year. Amoroso has been consistent but rather unlucky. Pretty Lass made a good impression when she won at the Egmont meeting. Gold Petal has made the grade from the maiden ranks, and may go on with it. A win for Jacynth or Phil would be unexpected. Form suggests: ECSTATIC, RED CAT, PRETTY LASS FLYING HANDICAP. (Of £250; six furlongs. ) Though small, the open sprint held is an even one. Amigo has the form and in a year when three-year-olds are carrying off most of the plums he will be well supported. Taitoru won as recently as Hawera and retains his form well. Laughing Lass, last year’s winner, has been galloping well at Awapuni, though so far this season she has failed to win. Notium was a winner here last year and also ran second in this race. He is reported to be well, as was indicated by his win at Pahiatua. Life Guard is a smart hack who must be respected. Airing, a winner at Opunake and useful on his day, is reported to be a doubtful starter. Prospects may be; AMIGO, NOTIUM, LAUGHING LAS'S,
