ROAD-SAFETY PENNANT
HOISTED AGAIN IN WELLINGTON BEARS TWO BLACK CROSSES. [Per Pi css Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 21. Wellington’s road safety pennant was hoisted again to-day. It now bears two black crosses, showing that since December 5 there have been two fatalities in the city and suburbs. When hauled down on February 10 as a result of a fatality it was practically worn out and was replaced by one presented by the deputy-mayor, Mr. Martin Luckie, chairman of the committee dealing with road safety for the city. There was some doubt prior to the first fatality which caused the striking of the old flag, whether it had not been up long enough in view of the fact that the safety campaign was carone presented by the deputy-Mayor, ried out some time previously and it had been decided to take it down on February 11 in any case, but the Transport Minister, Hon. R. Semple, has I suggested that during 1939 cities should fly pennants to see which could achieve the longest fatality-free record. This he says, would prepare for the centennial year traffic and keep the need of saving lives before citizens.
