RACING IN ENGLAND

MORE HORSES THAN EVER. In spite of the political and economic uncertainties of the last six months, racing has continued -to prosper in England. The number of horses that ran in England, Scotland, and Ireland last year was greater than ever before. Altogether, 5143 horses were seen out, of whom 1837 were two-year-olds and 1357 three-year-olds—both record figures. The total amount of stakes won in England was £731,826 10s 6d, which is slightly higher than the 1937 figures, but below that for 1928. During the season 1985 races were contested, of which 1032, or over half, were sprint events under a mile. There were 51 races over two miles, compared with 52 in 1937, and approximately one in every three races was for two-year-old only.

BEAUPARTIR OUT

WANGANUI SCRATCHINGS

As was suggested in the “Chronicle” yesterday morning, Beaupartir will not be on hand to contest the Wanganui Cup to-morrow, the three-year-old Beal Pere colt having been scratched at 10 a.nj. yesterday. At the same time Brazil and Chevychase were withdrawn from their engagements. Aussie Ra was scratched for the Wanganui Cup at 12.40 p.m. It is reported that All Spirit will not fulfil his Kai Iwi Hurdles engagement as he ricked himself when being scholed last Saturday. Another unlikely starter, it is stated, is Airing in the Flying Handicap.
