HORSES FROM HAWERA
WANGANUI CANDIDATES YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS I Conditions were ideal for training operations at Hawera yesterday morning when chief interest centred on the final gallops of horses engaged at Wanganui, writes “Goldspur,” in the Hawera Star. The plough was hard and fast. Fiancee (Ryan) reeled off five furlongs in 1.2 4-5. She should give a good account of herself in the maiden events. Chief Lord (Ryan) began better than Flamberge (Sexton) from the half-mile peg and shaded his companion throughout to record 50 2-ssec. It was the two-year-old’s best effort to date and he appears to be improving. Flamberge was not ridden out. Le Marquis (Fryer) traversed an easy five frulongs in 1.3 4-5. The Lord Quex gelding has gone on the right way since the Egmont meeting. Golden Orchid (Ryan) covered a similar distance in 1.2 L She has derived benefit from recent racing and is a good outside prospect in the apprentices’ race on Thursday.
Brought home over the last halfmile by Race Call (Chaplin) in 52i, Winsome Lu (Farland) got to the end of six furlongs in 1.20 L With little likelihood of rain before Thursday, owner-trainer L. George stated this morning that Winsome Lu is an unlikely starter in the Wanganui Cup. She may be reserved for the second day. Race Call was anxious to do ; better. On the Course Proper. Veldette (Sexton) shaded Algerian (Farland) at the close of half a mile in 52 2-5; good time considering that the pegs were on the extreme outside of the track. Raccaway (Farland) sprinted three furlongs in 41 4-5 without being bustled. Disturbed (Toki' and Professional (Grindlay) were companions over six schooling hurdles. Both horses fenced splendidly, the latter giving a much improved display in comparison with his two previous efforts since coming to Hawera. Riding engagements announced for Wanganui include:— O. Evans.—Taitoru (sprint), Golden Orchid. S. T. Edwards.—Pretty Lass. H. J. Callahan.—Le Marquis. H. Fryer.—Resinguard. L. H. Clifford.—Te Hula. J. K. Reynolds.—Amoroso. H. Wiggins.—Winsome Lu (if started), Veldette.
