WANGANUI CUP HISTORY
THREE-YEAR-OLD WINNERS. The Wanganui Cup has a history dating back to 1875, with a break in the sequence between 1930 and 1935, and it is of interest to record that no less than ten three-year-olds have won the race. Two of them, Betrayer (1880) and Sir George (1881), succeeded when the distance was 21 miles, and the other eight, Dudu (1888), St. Katharine (1893), Advance (1900), Nobility (1901), Nonette (1902), Boomerang (1906), Milan (1910), and Bronze (1912), when the distance was IS miles. The weight-carrying record for a three-year-old in the Wanganui Cup is the 8.11 carried by Nonette. The Wellington - Wanganui Cup double has only been won once in the same season by three-yeer-olds, when Renown won at Trentham in 1901 and Nobility at Wanganui. Defaulter has the first "leg” in this year, but Beaupartir's defection would make the feat difficult.
FAVOURED COURSE
CAREER OF FARLAND SIX VICTORIES AT TE RAPA When he won the President's Handicap at the Waikato Racing Club's summer meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday the sprinter Farland scored his sixth win in eight starts on the course. He was unplaced in his first start three years ago and ran third to Bachelor King and Te Monowai in the Flying Handicap at the Waipa Racing Club's meeting held at Te Rapa. Farland opened his winning account in the Ohinewai Hack Handicap al the Waikato spring meeting of 1937, and he followed that up with a success in the Otorohanga Handicap ac the club's winter meeting. He raced only once more that season, when unplaced at the Great Northern meeting.
Last season began auspiciously with a victory in the Taupiri Hack Handicap at the Waikato spring meeting, and, after four defeats, he returned a winner in the Stewards’ Handicap, at the winter fixture, three defeats following. The Cambridge Handicap at the Te Rapa spring meeting was his first race of the current season, and he won it convincingly. Although he had been placed twice in the interval, Saturday’s race in the President’s Handicap further proved his partiality for the Te Rapa course, the only one on which, so far, he has been successful.
In three seasons Farland has had six wins, two seconds and one third for £1456 in prize-money.
