AWAPUNI OPERATIONS

HORSES FOR WANGANUI CUP CANDIDATE’S GOOD.GALLOP (Special to “Chronicle.”) PALMERSTON N., Feb. 21. Horses which did not race at Woodville and which are engaged at Wanganui, were given their final trials at Awapuni this morning. Among those which went particularly well were The Bigot, who galloped seven furlongs with Beaupartir, and Laughing Lass, who was “dying” at the finish of half a mile on the plough. The course proper was open, with the flags nearly 50 feet out, but the going was hard. The plough was in good order but slow after a heavy

The Bigot (G. R. Taltersall) had the inside running with Beaupartir (Ireland) and he made all the running, setting a very fast pace from the outset. They were clocked to cover the first half-mile in 50i and five in 1.4 2-5, and Beaupartir was almost on terms when they turned for home. Both finished solidly and with Beaupartir apparently doing the better of the two they went over th* line together in 1.31 L It was a great gallop and they pulled up well. Beaupartir will not be a starter in the Cup. which The Bigot will be ridden by B. H. Morris.

First out was Ecstatic (Tattersall). She worked attractively over half a mile, running the last three in 38sec. to complete in 52sec. She is very well at present and she must be given a chance in the hack sprint at Wanganui. Oratory (G. Pratt) worked well over five furlongs, running the last three in 39 2-ssec. to complete in 1.4 2-ssec. She is not in at Wanganui but she will have her next race at Bulls.

Open Sprint Candidate. Laughing Lass (Tattersall) sprinted half a mile and after running the first two furlongs in 26 3-5 she came home brilliantly in 25sec. to complete in 51 3-5. She should take some heading off in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui. Golden Ridge, looking none the worse for his Woodville race, was exercised. His next start is to be in the Rangitikei Cup. Old Bill and Florence Mills were others let off with light tasks, as also was Newbury Queen.

Warehi (Kilmister), accepted for in the hurdles at Wanganui, was sprinted seven furlongs, taking 1.22 i for the last six. Warehi has been working better lately and it might not be very long before he gets some more stake money.

Taumau (A. McDonald) and Sudan (Ireland) were together at the end of six furlongs run in 1.36 3-5, and they went fast from the start to cut the first half-mile out in 52 3-5. Sudan is definitely improving and she appeared to be a bit unlucky at Woodville.

Dainty Sue (Tattersall) galloped seven, going very nicely to record 1.21 3-5 for the last six. She could have done better. White Gold (W. Jenkins) ran seven in 1.33. She does not look as if the racing she had at Woodville has done her any harm.

Old Surrey (Ireland) was supposed to be on the bit over six furlongs but he began quickly, and after running the first three in 39sec, he was slowing up at the finish, his time being 1.21. He has not galloped for some time and it should not take him long to again reach top form. On The Course Proper. Colibri (Tattersal), a youngster from Len Pine’s stable, scampered over three in 40 2-ssec. It was its first gallop. An interesting trial was that of La Bru (Tattersall) and Millament (Ireland). It was over half a mile and Millament finished in front. La Bru, however, went well and she was not ridden out. They ran the first furlong in 14sec, the last three in 38 3-5, and they completed in 52 3-5, which was quite a good effort.

Among the horses restricted to pace work were Conveyer, Diamond Cutter, who wanted to go fast, Taillight, Tangled, Lady Ina, Riotous, and Yed Prior. Wildflower was given a “pipeopener” on the plough, where Sey-

fried was held back to even time over seven. Riding Engagements. The following riding engagements have been announced for Wanganui: B. H. Morris.—La Bru, The Bigot, Laughing Lass, Ecstatic and White Gold. G. R. Tattersall.—Phil. Royal Hunting, Brazen King and Dissipation. J. Chaplin.—Warehi. W. J. McDowell.—Hanover. ■P. Jarvis.—Entheos. J. Forsyth.—Sporting Gift. W. Jenkins.—Little Dorrit.

W. J. Broughton will be riding at Wanganui on the first day but he will he at Te Aroha on Saturday and Monday.
