WAVERLEY CARNIVAL EXCELLENT SWIMMING SATURDAY’S RESULTS. (Own Correspondent.) Though weather conditions were rather unpleasant on Saturday night there was a record attendance at the Waverley Amateur Swimming Club’s second carnival of the season. Excellent swimming and diving was witnessed by spectators and Mr. Norman Dyer’s daring exhibition of diving and that of swimming given by Mr. D. P. Lindsay were greatly appreciated. At the conclusion of the carnival Mr. J. B, Cotterell presented the trophies. The following are the results;—

HAWKE'S BAY SWIMMER WINS OSMOND’S GREAT ENDURANCE. [ Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 19. Showing great endurance and firmly establishing his reputation as a distance swimmer, A. V. Osmond (Hawke's Bay) to-day won the Annette Kellerman three-mile openwater race in Bluff Harbour. The water was bitterly cold and only three of the ten starters finished the course. Osmond, whose handicap was 4min. 30sec., also secured fastest time, completing the course in Ihr. 56min. 25sec. Second place went to W. B. Milne, of Taranaki, who had a handicap of Imin. He finished 700 yards behind Osmond. Four hundred yards further back came C. M. Robertson (West Coast) in third place. F. Clow (Taranaki), last year’s winner, retired after svyimming a mile. J. Frank (Nelson) pulled out after swimming about half the course. He had no boat to guide him and had difficulty in keeping to the course. Details are: A. V. Osmond (Hawke’s Bay), 4min. 30sec., 1; W. B. Milne (Taranaki), Imin, 2; C. M. Robertson (West Coast), 2min. 30sec., 3. The actual times of the placed men were: Ihr. 56min. 25sec., 2hr. Bmin. 22sec., and 2hr. 13min. 45see.

MARTON CARNIVAL

WANGANUI SWIMMERS ENTER FREELY TO-MORROW NIGHT’S BIG ATTRACTION Wanganui swimmers have entered

freely for the monster swimming carnival which is to be staged by the Wanganui Swimming Centre in the Marton baths to-morrow night, and altogether between 100 and 150 swimmers from the local clubs will be competing. The programme will be a very attractive one, and it is hoped that It will result in interest in swimming ip Marton being stimulated. A large number of swimmers from the Martoji district schools have entered for the district events, and there will also be a relay race for teams of girls from the Marton District High School and the Maori Girls’ College Further attractions will be the lifesaving demonstrations by members of the Castlecliff Surf Section, and breaststroke swimming by the New Zealand 100yds. champion, L. Smith, of Wanganui. There will be required several heats in some of the events, so heavy is the list of entries, and keen con tests and close finishes appear assur ed. Prices for admission have beer fixed at a very low scale, and give: fine weather the carnival should prove most successful.
