BOWLING NOTES (Own Correspondent). MARTON, Feb. 20. During the week-end six rinks from the Palmerston North, Hokowhitu and Takaro Clubs visited Marton and tock part in an all-day full rink tournament. A novel departure was made from the usual competition rules, which proved most enjoyable. The names of each position player were drawn for places In rinks with, with the result that the visitors and local players were distributed among the fourteen rinks that took part. In the jnornir.g three rounds of eight heads each were played and in the afternoon two rounds of eleven heads. The winners were Nuttall, Humphries, Ward and Hamer (Marton), who went through without a loss, and Clesmore, Dixon, Richardson and D. J. Lovelock (Hokowhitu) were runners-up with four wins and a draw. An iced cake was donated by Mr. F. P. Gould to the winning rink, and in order to find the winner ‘.he members of Hamer’s rink each played two bowls from the four corners of the green to the “jack” in the centre, W. Ward being the lucky winner.

At the conclusion of the day’s play Mr. F. Hempieman (president) presented the prizes to the winners, and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, representatives of the visiting ciubs responding. ; “PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK” ON THE TENNIS COURTS At the tennis courts on Saturday a number of exhibition games were played by top-ranking players, ano a number of competition matches were got off. A surprise was provided in the men's championship doubles, two young players, J. Hutton and E. Oliver, defeating S. L. E. Torrens and M. C. Fenwicke by two sets out of three, in an excellent display of stroking and courtcraft. The several visitors enjoyed their afternoons play. ATHLETIC SPORTS TO-NIGHT MARTON v. WANGANUI On the Marton Park this (Tuesday) evening an athletic contest will take place between Wanganui ano Marton athletes, commencing a 8 o’clock sharp. There should be some interesting trials of speed between the best athletes that these clubs can produce. MONSTER SWIMMING CARNIVAL In the Marton .baths to-morrow (Wednesday) evening, an attractive programme of swimming and diving events has been arranged and 150 swimmers will be taking part in the differeit events, including a big contingent from the Wanganui swimming centre. The sport will start at

8 o'clock and the prices of admission are Is for adults and 3d for children under 14 years of age. MARTON SCHOOL PICNIC ABANDONED At a special meeting of the Marton District High School Committee on Saturday evening, it was decided to abandon the school picnic this year. It was felt that the school was too large for such an outing and it meant a great deal o£ responsibility lor the teachers.
