WANGANUI BASEBALL
BENSEL SHIELD GAMES SATURDAY’S RESULTS The Wanganui Baseball Associa lion’s Bensel Shield competition wa. advanced a further stage on Satin day, the following being the result of the games played:—
Notes on the Play. It might be noted by the teams that in championship play the rule relative to the size and weight of the balls must be adhered to. I'he regulation size for the ball is not less than 11 7-8 inches or more than 12i inches in circumference, and the weight not less than 6ozs. or more than 6Sozs. The rule has not been strictly enforced till recently. The reason foi the enforcement is because of the different sources from which balls are procured and it is necessary for teams to purchase material that conforms to regulations. Bat tips must also be taped or corked.
Star A v. Harriers A. This was the best game of the day, and Star played their best game this season. Right from the first innings Star played fast, determined baseball and it was soon seen that Harriers would have a hard task to snatch another victory. Star's victory was well deserved and both teams played first-class baseball. Harriers B v. Star B. This was a fairly steady game. Play was mainly confined to the infield, although Hean, playing in Star B’s outfield, fielded some excellent balls. All sections of the game are being tightened up considerably and
both teams played well. Harriers’ batting was quite good and was well backed up by its fielders. P. and T. v. Watersiders B. This was a good, fast game. In the main play was strenuously contested. P. and T. started well but did not seem to be able to keep up the rice. Watersiders played a good game ana B. Trow especially, excelled both in batting and fielding. United v. Sash and Door. This was a very poor game and neither team seemed to have any enthusiasm. Fielding and batting rather sluggish. Both teams seemed to have an off day and were not at all up to their usual standard oi play. Merewethcr’s v. Watersiders A. This was a very one-sided match and Watersiders could not make a start. All through the game then hitting was blocked by Merewcthers strong fielding, and their own fielding was too loose, giving Mcrcwether’s many opportunities to steal bases. Pirates v. Wanganui East. This game was really fast fror’ start to finish. Hard hitting and good fielding was a feature of the game, and Wanganui East player very well to give Pirates such a close run.
