ON WANGANUI TRACKS
AUTUMN PREPARATIONS SATURDAY’S GALLOPS. No visiting horses had put in their appearance on Saturday morning, and training activities on the Wanganui tracks were confined to the local brigade.- The weather was fine and after a fairly long dry spell the number one grass track and the outside of the course proper were rather hard. The trestles were out about 12 feet on the course proper, but for practic-
ally half the width of the track water has been applied and there is a good sward of grass, horses, galloping just outside the trestles appreciating this. Five furlongs in 61 3-ssec. was the task accomplished by Submission, who had the featherweight D. M. Horne in the saddle. The Limond filly appreciated the work-out under a light burden and reeled off the first furlong in 12. 3-ssec. and the first three in a shade under 36sec. Submission is very well and, bracketed with Dynasty, she should prove an attractive proposition in the Juvenile Handicap ’ on Thursday.
Submission’s gallop was or. thfnumber one grass track, close in to the rail, but Darthura (M. Horne), and March Easy (S..T. Edwards) were on the course proper for their spin over five furlongs, which took them a tick under 65sec. with Darthura, always going well within herself, coming away over the final stages and finishing a couple of lengths in front. Darthura and March Easy, both Kai Iwi Maiden candidates but in different ownerships, are trained by L. G. Butler and probably both will start in this race. S. T. Edwards having the mount on Darthura. Entail, with trainer W. Rayner in the saddle, went a mile on the course proper at a strong clip, taking lmin. 20sec. for the last six furlongs and lmin. 32sec. for the last seven. The Posterity gelding came to no harm as a result of his races at Hawera, and with Edwards in the saddle in the Wanganui Cup on Thursday he must be given a good outside chance. Without being extended, War Lap (Edwards) covered five furlongs on the course proper in 64sec, doing it well within himself at the finish. The Lapidary gelding is in good order and after his Hawera win at seven furlongs his prospects in the Tayforth Hack Handicap (71 furlongs) appear to be very bright. Airing, who does not. appreciate the hard tracks, was let off with light exercise, and All Bunsby also was not required to do any serious work.
The only gallops cf consequence after the breakfast interval were done by Baron Bold and Amatory. The first-named, looking bright and well, slipped over five furlongs on the course proper in a shade over 64sec., doing it very nicely, and Amatory, with young Horne up, covered a mile in lmin. 45sec, going at an even pace throughout, with the first three furlongs taking him 41sec. Amatory is well placed to extend his record in the Victory Hack Handicap. All Spirit, the only local candidate for the Westmere Hack Hurdles, was schooled over four flights of battens and jumped cleanly but with very little pace. He was ridden by J. Head. Lady Hoariri, who claims engagements in the Victory Hack and the Tayforth Hack Handicap on Thursday, was restricted to strong pacework and was then given a working gallop over five furlongs. The Hoariri mare is standing up to the work well after a spell, and the fact that she has schooled well may be encouraging in view of the fact that she is to be started in the hurdle race on the second clay of the Wanganui meeting. Useful pacework was done by The Tryst. Peach Blossom, Amigo, and several others. In an attempt to restrain Amigo from his tearaway tactics during training operations, owner-trainer L. G. Paul used a special double-pur-chase bit on the Beau Pere gelding on Saturday morning. It appeared to have the desired effect, for Amigo, with K. Chote in the saddle, was well controlled as he cantered a couple of circuits and then trotted once round.
