OBITUARY
MRS. JEAN MCDONALD When the death occurred at Whangarei last week of Mrs. Jean McDonald, in her 91st year, another of the old pioneers passed on. After a six months voyage by sailing ship from England, Mrs. McDonald arrived at Wellington with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Morrison, in 1856. The emigrant’s brought with them all their worldly possessions, including a horse and waggon, which conveyed them from Wellington, by way of the beach, to Wanganui. The Morrisons resided (or a short time on Durie Hill, then settled at Fern Flats, Marton. Among Mrs. McDonald’s memories of the early days, was the occasion during the Maori Wars, when she and her sister, each carrying a small child, walked from Marton to Wanganui for shelter in the Rutland Stockade. Following her marriage, Mrs. McDonald lived in the Wanganui district, where her husband farmed for more than 40 years up to the time of his death. Mrs. McDonald spent the last years of her life ar Whangarei. She endeared herself to a large circle of friends, by her warmth and generosity. Her eagerness to be of service was reflected in her work for the Presbyterian Church, of which she was a keen member. She leaves a family of four chfljren.
