PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK

TAIHAPE’S PROGRAMME MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (Own Correspondent.) TAIHAPE, Feb. 16. The programme for Physical Fitness Week was tentatively arranged at a meeting of the committee held on Tuesday evening. The Mayor (Mr. L. B. H. de Lautour) occupied the chair. Physical Drill. Mr. Whibley reported that arrangements had been made to begin physical drill at 7 a.m. on Saturday, February 18. “We thought that we would see how many came before dividing into squads. All we need to ensure the success of the project is a good attendance. Mr. D. G. Revell will be instructor and it is the airr of the committee to make the thing enjoyable as well as health giving. It was proposed to start at 7 a.m. and finish about 7.30 a.m,” explained Mr. Whibley. On the motion of Mr. D. Woodhead it was decided to adopt the recommendation of the sub-committee regarding physical drill. The Mayor: The object of the movement is to induce those who are not in the habit of taking active exercise to indulge in some form of sport. Tennis Club’s Gesture. Mr. Graham reported that the Taihape Tennis Club had arranged to “throw open” their courts to the public on Saturday and to hold a Yankee tourney whereby all players would meet each other. It was hoped that the Bowling Club would also make their green available to the public on Saturday. Church Parade. Rev. L. C. Clements suggested that the church parade should be “localised” so that one church only would be used. Mrs. Seccombe suggested that an open-air service be held. Mr. Loader thought that a combined service in the Town Hall might be better. The matter was left in (he hands of the ministers to arrange. Rev. L. C. Clements was appointed convenor of the meeting. Mr. R. Spence reported that the Taihape Amateur Athletic Club would run extra twilight meetings, and also co-operate with the committee in every way. The Mayor thought that Sunday, February 19, should be an “open day” and that each person should go his own way. Mr. Holloway suggested that the hours for ladies learning lo swim should be from 9 a.m. till 10 a.m. and that men should be taught in the evening. Open-air Dancing. Open -air dancing and community singing is to be held from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Domain on Monday, February 20. Twilight sports will be held on Tuesday and Friday of next Dancing and community singing will also be held on Friday evening, and

school games in the afternoon. Mr. Holloway expressed the opinion that ordinary club games should be held on Saturday, February 25. The Alphine Club has arranged an excursion to Ruapehu leaving on Saturday night, February 25. Baseball will be played on the 26th, at Taihape, when visiting teams from Wanga nui will be seen in action. Big Day. Thursday, March 2, will be the “big day” of Fitness week. Activities for the occasion include a sports meeting on the Domain. A parade will be held about 1.30 p.m. on this day, and all sports bodies and local organisations are invited to participate. The Taihape District High School will participate in the celebrations. Capt. Schulze was appointed to take charge of the parade and the marshalling of the various units. Inter-house Competition. Mrs. Ceccombe suggested an interhouse competition for working girls and thought that the girls should take part in the parade dressed in suitable costumes. Mr. Whibley agreed and thought that inter-house competition should bo included in the programme lor Thursday, March 2. lie hoped that the idea would be continued after Physical Fitness Week. Mr. Whibley reported that a school drill display would be held on March 2, lasting about an hour. Mr. Holloway suggested a display by the St. John Ambulance and also a demonstration of resuscitation methods. The following sub-committee was elected to investigate certain mat Lei s regarding “Physical Fitness Week". [Messrs. R. B. Schulze, J. C. Whibley, H. R. Rush, F. Fisher, Mrs. W. E. Constable and the secretary (Mr. W. G. Holloway). On the motion of Mrs. M. Glenny it, was decided to hold an open-air, dance on the night of March 2 as a fitting finale to the day's activities. A motion by Mr. Winsett that the dance be held in the Town Hall was lost.
