WAIMARINO COUNTY COUNCIL

ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report covering county works during January, was submitted to the February meeting of the Waimarino County Council at Raetihi by the county engineer (Mr. H. L. Hogg) Huikumu Riding.—The worst ragwort infested areas have now been treated, and up to the present the results appear to be very satisfactory. The grader has been usd to trim up the Pipiriki Road to a point near the Huikumu road junction, and over the greater portion of the Mangaeturoa Road. The usual maintenance work has been done. Karioi Riding.—Metalling has been commenced on the Turakina Valley Road. Watertabling and general repair work is being continued on Fields Track. When the worst sections of this road are done attention will be given to the Oruakukuru Road. A new culvert is required on Yeoman’s access road, the pipes for which will be delivered, and the culvert set as soon as possible. Slips have been cleared, and minor maintenance work done on the Wangaehu Valley Road. Several sections of this road require re-surfacing as it is not possible to effectively grade these particular sections; other roads also require repairs to the metal. Approximately 750 cubic yards will be required to do what is necessary. Manganui Riding. The small bridge near Scarrow’s on the Pukekaha Road has been renewed, and work is now proceeding on renewal of the defective timbers in the bridge over the Orautoha stream on this road. This bridge is being strengtheaeG to carry heavy loads of metal. Rcugh sections of the road on Short’s 1'11! are being coated with metal chips; repairs will be done to the sect.cn of the Ohura Road between the Va ley Road, and the Pipipi Road junction as convenient. The work in connection with the eradication of ragwort in this riding has been completed for the season. I have not yet been able to attend to repairs, and other maintenance matters on the Manganui Valley Road owing to pressure of other works. Ohakune Riding.—Work has been commenced on the tar-sealing work on Ohakune Road. This work has been delayed owing to the wet weather in the early part of the season. Only the priming coat is being | applied this season; the seal coat will ,be laid early next season. To be able to carry on this class of work rapidly and economically, a tar and bitumen pre-heater is very much in need, and should be procured before next season’s work is commenced, especially in view of the amount of work to be done in the future. I understand work is to be commenced on the metalling Rata Maire Road in the near future. Repairs are necessary to the old Horopito Road leading to Marshall’s; this work will be done as soon as possible. j Parapara Riding.—Owing to comparatively heavy loads being transported across the suspension bridge on the Matahiwi Road and mobs of large cattle being forced on to the bridge it has been necessary to do certain repairs to the towers, also adjust one of tli • cables which has been strained. Notices limiting the loads to 2 tons have been affixed to this bridge for .<■ me considerable time; apparently [ nj heed is being taken of the restric--1 t on. It has not. so far, been posIsibie to attend to the Oruakukuru ' Read as meantime all forces are being i concentrated on the crusher output, ; and Ohakune road sealing works. The I position has been made more acute through not having the use of the new truck; the position will be eased when this machine comes to hand. Ruatiti Riding.—Work is being continued under the ‘‘No 13 scheme.” Workmen are employed on the Mangatiti, Waipapa, and Mangapurua Roads in general re-conditioning works. The repairs lo the metal on the Murumuru, and Ohura Roads, and the proposed work with the grader hive had to be still further deferred. I anticipate, however, that it will be possible to do this work at a nea r date, or immediately pressure of other works is reduced.
