CENTENNIAL PARK BABY CARNIVAL TO BE HELD MARTON, Feb. 16. The ball was set rolling on Wednesday evening for the raising ol ■ sufficient funds by means of a carnival, for the purpose of purchasing a Centennial Park in Marton, when I the committee set up last week met i Lo make preliminary arrangements. I His Worship the Mayor, Mr. F. Purnell, presided over Messrs. G. B. Gregory, T. Low, W. J. Mogridge, H. H. Richardson, J. R. Howard, M. Atkinson, W. G. Aitken, E. G. Friedrich, T. C. Ward, C. C. McDonald, and Dr. R. A. Church. The meeting resolved itself into a round-table discussion as to the form of carnival —baby or queen—and after thoroughly ventilating the question it was decided on the motion of Mr. Atkinson, and seconded by Mi. Ward, to conduct a baby carnival and to limit it to three babies—Sports, Town, and Country—the age beingunder two years. A central committee was apointed, consisting of Mr. F. Purnell (chairman and treasurer), Mr. C. C. McDonald (secretary) and the chairman of each committee. Sub-Committees—Country: Messrs. Aitken and Friedrich, with power to add. Town: Messrs. Mogridge, Low, Gracie and T. E. Barton. Sports. Messrs. A. Barr, A. Way, J. H. Dashwood and W. A. Sawyer. These committees will choose their babies. A general meeting will be held again on Thursday, March 2, in the Council Chambers at 7.30 p.m. It is hoped to commence the cartinale about May 26. Votes will be of one penny each.

GAME OF BOWLS An invitation is extended to til'-' general public to participate m a game of bowls on Saturday aiteinoon on the Marton green, in connection with the opening day ot “Physical Fitness Week." INTER-CLUB TENNIS ST, ANDREW'S DEFEAT RATA The Wanganui C grade championship elimination tennis match between St. Andrew's, Marton, and Rata Clubs has been won by the lormer. The contest began on Saturday, but rain during the afternoon interrupted play, Marton at that time leading by five sets, 68 games, to three sets 64 games. On Wednesday afternoon on the St. Andrew's courts, the match was completed, Marton further increasing its lead to 11 sets, 122 games, to five sets and 116 games. The Rata team differed somewhat from the team which made its appearance on Saturday, this being due to some of the players being unavailable for a mid-week match. CAR DESTROYED BY FIRE A motor-car belonging to Edward Francis Kenzie, Lambert Street, Marton, was totally destroyed by fire on Monday evening at tvbout 9.30 o’clock. Mr. Kenzie was driving his car along the Nga Tawa Road looking for a ! short circuit, when the lights suddenly I went out and the front of the car burst into flames. The driver jumped lout of the vehicle, but the car conI tinued along the road for some 15 I feet and then capsized on a small bridge. The driver found it impossible to extinguish the flames. THE VIOLA BARKER SCHOOL The Viola Barker School of Dancing opens as usual in March. Miss Barker is planning to hold extra classes this year for limbering and stretching, rhythmic movement and exercises suitable for adults of all 'ages. Those interested in these classes are asked to communicate with Miss Barker.
