OHAKUNE NEWS

A large and representative meeting in connection with the “Physical Fitness Week" campaign was held in the council chambers and presided over by the Mayor (Mr. H. Delamar). Advice was received that a permanent committee approved by the Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs had seen set up in Ohakune of seven members with the Mayor as chairman. Much interest was taken in respect of sporting activities for the “Fitness Week" commencing on February 18, and a keen desire by all those present to take an active part. It was unanimously decided to hold a large procession on the opening day and successful efforts have been made with the camp commandant to have a number of Territorials from th” Waiouru military camp to take part in the procession. The opening day, Saturday, will commence with a procession and a programme of sports events, Ihe latter being conducted under the auspices of the Ohakune Caledonian Society. During the week there will he several sporting events the principal items being cycle races, wrestling. tug-o-war. boxing, croquet, tennis and bowls competitions, football matches and displays by the school children. It has been decided to conclude the weeks activities on Friday, February 24. with a grand dance at night and to hold the final pulls of the tug-o-war at the same time. REQUIEM MASS. There was a large congregation at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where the Rev. Father McGlone celebrated a Requieum Mass in connection with the death of the late Pope Pius XI. The Rev. Father paid an eloquent tribute to the life and work of the deceased pontiff. On behalf of

the Ohakune Borough Council the service was attended by the Mayor (Mr. H. Delamar) and the Town Clerk (Mr. S. Torepe).
