OHAKUNE BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. . (Own Correspondent). OHAKUNE, Feb. 14. The usual monthly meeting of the above council was held in the Ohakune Borough Council Chambers. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. H. Delamar) presided. There were also present Crs. H. Morrow, F. Standish, W. Proffit, T. Gordon, W. Mahony, H. Rush, O. Spiller and L. E. Jordan. Prior to the commencement of business His Worship referred to the passing of an old councillor in the person of the late John Walsh. He was a rugged type of man and had served on the council with a long and good service. A motion of condolence was passed and the council stood in silence for a minute. Letters were received from the following:— From the Inspector of Health advising that he will be absent on annual leave for three weeks, and any urgent matters should be referred to Inspector of Flowers of Marton. From Plunket Society appealing for a grant towards the funds of the society.—Resolved that £5 be granted. —Carried. From the Taihape Borough Council to contribute a sum of £lO as its share towards the erection of a provincial memorial at Petone in connection with the Centennial Exhibition.—lt was resolved not to make a further grant. The Labour Department wrote advising that men on scheme 13 who disobey instructions will be instantly dismissed. Notice was also received from the Board of Governors of the Corporation had approved of the council’s loan ol £3600 and advising that the matter has now to be referred to the Local Government Loans Board for final approval. A petition was received from the res:d< nts of Burns Street and others asking the council to take up the matter of opening up the road from the bottom of Burns Street to M&karanuias as it would greatly shorten the distance between Ohakune and Raetihi. It was resolved to write to the County Council in regard to this matter and see what can be done.
The N.Z. Railways forwarded a plan for the sealing of the approaches to the railway station stating that the Department supply all the material and the council to undertake to carryout the work.—lt was resolved on the motion of the Mayor that the offer be approved.
A letter was also received from the P. and T. Department that it considers that the damage done to the cable by men working for the council was coused as a result of negligence and the council is held responsible for the repairing of the cable. It was resolved by Cr. Morrow that at no time has the road been lowered subsequent to the laying of the cable, and at no time was the cable placed three feet below the surface of the road level. The Main Highways Board forwarded an additional authority for £5O for maintenance on sealed highway.
It was resolved on the motion of His Worship the Mayor and the town clerk make further negotiations in respect of erecting conveniences at the camp site. From the P. and T. Department advising that owing to exceedingly small revenue that would be received from slot telephones especially from the one at the Junction, it is regretted that under the circumstances the council’s request cannot be acceeded
Cr. Spiller said he felt that a slot telephone was badly needed in the town. He mentioned that in his business there were as many as 20 callers a day to ring up on the phone. Cr. Mahony said he supported Cr. Spiller in his contentions. Cr. Spiller moved that the department be written to again, asking for a further consideration for the establishment of a slot phone in the town.
