BOROUGH OF PATEA

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL MONDAY NIGHT’S BUSINESS (Own Correspondent) PATEA, Feb. 14. The report of the executive committee on the Town Hall lease was considered in committee at th Patea Borough Council last night, and, aftr considerable discussion, was confirmed and adopted. It was decided to communicate with the Minister of Public Works and request that the construction of the new Patea Bridge be expedited. The District Highways Board is to be communicated with regarding the state of the beach highway.

The inspector of health, Mr. W. S. Steele, in his quarterly report, stated that he had made 56 visits and two cases of infectious disease were reported. No action was taken in regard to the suggestion from the Waitara Borough Council that the Crown Law Office draw up and print by-laws applicable to the whole of the Dominion and issue them to all Borough Councils in lieu of local by-laws. Cr. Ramsbottom said the same bylaws could not apply to every town. The Mayor: If they knew enough about borough affairs they would not make the suggestion. The Commissioner of Transport asked the council to express its views regarding motor-cyclists, so that the New Zealand Road Council could consider what restrictions would be imposed on them.—A resolution was passed that in the opinion of the council motor-cyclists should be barred from the road altogether because of the danger to other motorists. Cr. Ramsbottom asked if the council was working in co-operation with the Seaside Improvement Society regarding the erection of the swimming pool.

The Mayor, Crs. Naismith, F. Ramsbottom and the town clerk were appointed a Centennial Committee with the addition ot Messrs. H. Peacocke and H. Boagey to make application to the Provincial Centennial Committee that the Patea Centennial memorial be the erection of a paddling pool at the beach.

The town clerk is to meet the Provincial Centennial Committee this week and explain the project to them.

Cr. Fuller-Sandys was of the opinion that swimming baths should be built in the town instead of at the beach.

Those present at the meeting were the Mayor. Mr. E. F. Hemingway (presiding), Crs. F. Naismith, J. Bromiley, F. Ramshottom, S. R. Fuller-Sandys. F. McKenna. A. H. Langslow and the town clerk, Mr. L. W. Austin, and electrical engineer. Mr. J. O. Cunningham.
