MARTON PASTIMES
SWIMMING CARNIVAL “KEEP FIT” WEEK MARTON, Feb. 14. The swimming carnival to be held in the Marton baths on Wednesday night, February 22, in connection with Fitness Week, promises to be the biggest event of the kind for years locally. Up to 150 competitors are expected from Wanganui and district clubs, and between 30 and 50 from Waverley, with many others from local and district enthusiasts. A comprehensive programme has been arranged, including open, handicap and novelty events, for seniors, intermediate (under 17 years of age on October 1, 1938) and junior (under 14 years of age on October 1). It is expected that one event likely to create considerable interest is a contest between girls from the Marton D.H. School and the Maori Girls’ College. The Wanganui Swimming Centre has been most active in the promoting of the carnival, in the hopes of resuscitating the Marton Swimming Club. Visiting competitors and officials are afterwards to be entertained to supper in the Civic Theatre. No entry fee is being charged competitors. The gate charges to the general public will be Is and to children under 14 years of age 3d. INTER-CLUB TENNIS The uncompleted tennis match between Rata and St. Andrew’s, Marton, will be played on the latter’s courts this afternoon. The contest, which is for the Wanganui C grade championship, was commenced on Saturday, but rain compelled an early adjournment. The Rata players will be ready for play at 3 p.m. and local players are requested to be at the courts at that time.
