UPROAR IN COMMONS
CONTRACT FOR BREN GUNS. ALLEGED POLITICAL GRAFT. OTTAWA, Feb. 10. There was wild disorder in the House of Commons when the Defence Minister, Mr. lan MacKenzie, in defending a Government contract for Bren guns, heard an unidentified Conservative from the Opposition refer to Colonel J. L. Ralston, Mr. MacKenzie’s adviser, as “another grafter.” The Minister shouted: “Whoever said that is a dirty liar. If he will come outside I will knock his head off.” The speaker intervened. There was an uproar again when the Minister referred to a GermanCanadian Conservative member as a Prussian and was forced to withdraw his remark. The Opposition alleges that 7000 Bren guns were ordered from a pru vate firm which also had a war office order. It was described as political patronage, the Opposition declaring that the guns should have been manufactured by the Government itself.
