! FLAMES SWEEP DOWN ON HOTEL DANGER AVERTED AT LAST MINUTE. [ Per Press Association.! HASTINGS, Feb. 13. Fierce fires, aided by a high wind, swept down this afternoon on the Terraces Hotel, Taupo, causing the guests and staff to pack their belongings and leave hastily. Fire-fighters, assisted by a change of wind, averted the danger at the last, minute when the fire was within thirty yards of the building. A wall of flame. 50 feet high, made an impressive sight, and the heat caused service cars and other vehicles, to seek safety near the lakeside. The Napier service car was held up for three hours waiting for the flames to subside so that the road could be negotiated. Late to-night the hotel appears to be out. of danger unless there is a change m the wind.
