OBITUARY

COLONEL J. E. HUME [ Per Press Association.] NELSON, Feb. 13. Colonel J. E. Hume has died at the age of 73 years. Colonel Hume was born in India and came to New Zealand in 1880, joining the civil service in 1883. In 1894-95 he was in command of the Field Force artillery and police in the Urewera country, being specially thanked by the Government for his services. He served in South Africa, being mentioned in despatches. Early this century he was placed in command of the Auckland and Wellington military districts. He served in the Great War, again being mentioned in despatches. He became a C.B.E. in 1919. Colonel Hume was an all-round athlete. He was a champion sculler.
