WANGANUI BASEBALL

BENSEL SHIELD SATURDAYS RESULTS Another series of matches in th Wanganui Baseball Association's Ben set Shield competition was played 01 Saturday, with the following results Star A 37, v. United 21

Home Runs.—Pirates: Gurney and Maitland 2 each. P. Green, Ansell, Kench and B. Pedley 1. Star A v. United. —This was a long, drawn-out game. Both teams were a little off their game, although they improved near the finish. United’s fielding at the start was very loose and allowed Star to put up a big score in the first innings. W. Rush and I. Harding played well for United and J. Broad, of Star, also played well. Pirates v. Watersiders B. This game was very one-sided, although it was quite a good match. Pirates played a very good game and scored a number of home runs. The wind, however, was a bit deceptive for pitching and neither pitcher was able to give of his best. Watersiders. considering they were playing against such a superior team, gave a good account of themselves and, on the whole, played a fast game. Wanganui East v. P. and T.—Fast scoring was a feature of this game and both teams played well. Wanganui East's batting was very good but base runners had to be careful due to P. and T.’s much-improved fielding. Both teams’ battery played well and there was little to choose between them. The game was fast and entertaining, P. and T. especially showing improvement. Sash and Door v. Harriers A.—This was really the most exciting and best-played match of the day. A feature of the game was the enthusiastic barracking by the large crowd of spectators. Starting fairly slowly but later increasing in pace, the game was one of the best seen in Wanganui to date. Hard hitting blocked by clever fielding soon made runs increasingly difficult to get and every run had to be earned. The Harriers’ pitcher was a little weak but that did not top Harriers from snatching a two-point victory from Sash and Door. Merewether’s v. Star B. —This was an excellent, fast and hardly contested game. There was little to choose between the teams. Merewether's have improved remarkably and use all they know to gather points. All departments of the game were excelled in and some really fine baseball was played. Watersiders A v. Harriers B.—This game was mainly characterised by good all-round play. Overthrows were scarce and some brilliant catches were made. Watersiders improved a lot from last week and kept the play fast all the way through the game. Harriers also played well and their base men played excellent games.
