TWIN-ENGINED FIGHTER
SECRET TESTS OF NEW AMERICAN PLANE. SPEED OF NEARLY 400 M.P.H. I Received Feb. 12, 7 p.m. LOS ANGELES, Feb. 11. The army corps has announced sue-. cessful secret tests with a revolution- , ary single-seater twin-engined lighter. Major-General Arnold, chief of the; corps, admitted that the plane flew at nearly 400 m.p.h., and commented I that it "probably exceded in performance any military plane in the world. It opens up new horizons of perform-, ance unattainable by the nations banking solely on single engines.” Army engineers are convinced that I fighters are reaching the limits of ’their single engines while the multimotored bambers are going on to ■ higher speeds. They have decided that twin-engined fighters are the logical step. The Lockheed Corporation has been secretly building a machine for 18 months. It is all-metal and streamlined, and the motors are mounted on I the leading edge or each wing. Features include tricycle landing gear, a [highlift device for quick climbing, and ! I substratosphere living equipment.
