Fire broke out in the waste paper store of the Whakatane paper mills at 1 o'clock this morning and 300 tons were destroyed, a concrete building being gutted. The alarm was given at 1.30 and the brigade travelled live miles to the mill, which is outside its area, and worked from 2 o’clock until 8, when the outbreak was then under control. Water had to be pumped from the adjacent river. The manager, Mr. Horrocks, stated that the loss was fully insured. The cause was unknown but. it was thought that the fire may have been due to spontaneous combustion in the tightly packed paper which was required to commence cardboard manufacture in March.
