The track was fast and the weather tine for the first clay of the Auckland Trotting Club’s February meeting. The attendance was large and the totalisator handled £36,941, against £21,027 10s last year, an increase of £15,913 10s. Van Derby, in a paced attempt on the Australian and New Zealanu grass track record of 2.1 1-5 for one mile, went 2.0 2-5, covering the hail in 1.0 3-5... OFFICIAL STATEMENT MADE I Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Feb. 11. Although Don Walla was withdrawn from the Waiheke Handicap at Epsom to-day after the closing of the totaliseitor and was therefore officially a starter, the investments on him were returned by the Auckland Trotting Club. Following the withdrawal, an official statement of the position was macle in the presence of the president, Mr. E. G. Briclgens. "No horse is allowed to go to the post with an assistant other than the starter’s assistant excepting with the permission of the stewards. Special pet mission was given tor a man to go to the post with Don Walla. Al Hit barrier the starter refused permission for the attendant to act. because he had not been officially notified. He sent N. Cunningham, owfier-drivcr, to the stipendiary steward to get permission. This was immediately forthcoming but. Cunningham elected to withdraw the horse. The totalisator, having been closed, no withdrawal of the moneys on the horse could be permitted. The club made an announcement before the race that investments would be refunded in full. The club was therefore put to a loss of £301.” An inquiry is to be held on Monday. A. W. Broughton, driver ot Tumble, was severely cautioned for careless driving in lhe Waiheke Handicap, causing interference with Scottisn Bard. The stipendiary stewards made full inquiries into 'the accident in the Otahuhu Handicap, in which Sandusky and Bexley Girl were implicated, but it was announced that there was insufficient evidence to justify further action.
