WANGANUI CLUB’S MEETING OUTSTANDING RUNNING AND CYCLING EVENTS Those who braved the showery weather on Saturday night to attend the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s gala sports meeting on Cook’s Gardens were rewarded by a nroeramme of events packed with thrills. Wanganui athletes held their own in the running events against the best athletes of surrounding districts, and many fine performances were registered. The star attraction of the meeting was the appearance of W. Pullar, of Masterton, the Empire Games miler. Acceding the limit man ISO yards, Pullar won lhe mile in convincing style by about 10 yards. He caught the field at the end of the third lap and, although J. Wallace, of Wanganui, ran a great race and held lhe champion for a large portion of the last lap, Pullar was not to be denied and won comfortably. Other outstanding Wanganui performers were P. Wallace who, with a great finish, won the 440 yards, and was just beaten by Gordon in the 220; R. Burbush, who came third and second, respectively, in the senior and junior sprints with excellent times, and R. Harris, who scored a fine win in the junior half-mile. Crack riders from as far north as Auckland contested the cycling events and close finishes made the races highlights of the meeting. Wanganui honours went to the first-year rider, G. Broadbent, who won the half-mile in brilliant style. The 10-mile invitation scratch race resulted in a win for J. Wilson (Wellington), with M. Byrnes (Wanganui) second.
