KWANGTUNG COAST
POSSIBLE INVASION SUBDUING OF GUERRILLAS Received Feb. 10, 5.5 p.m. HONGKONG, Feb. 9. The concentration of Japanese warships and transports in the vicinity of Pakhoi, including the flagship Idumo, suggests that the next major operation may be an invasion of the Kwangtung coast. Airmen have begun an intensive bombardment of Pakhoi from a new air base on Kweichow Island, which was captured last week. The west end of the city was set on fire, but casualties were small, because 20,000 people had evacuated to the country. The withdrawal of large numbers of Japanese troops from the war zones is regarded as most significant, and has resulted in Chinese irregulars recapturing several centres in the Canton area.
General Sugiyama has begun his first major operation since he assumed command at the end of last year in an attempt to gain control of the central Hopei Province, efforts to subdue which were repelled throughout the year. General Sugiyama claims to have captured Ankuo, an important guerrilla centre.
