WINTER GARDEN
CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTION AUTHORISED WANGANUI COUNTY'S SUPPORT Approval of the proposal of the Wanganui Centennial Zone Committee to provide a winter garden at Virginia Lake as a centennial memorial was approved al yesterday's meeting of the Wanganui County Council when the council agreed to contribute £175 toward the cost. Or. D. McGregor, who represented the council at a meeting of the committee this week, said that the cost of the winter garden would be £lsou of which £5OO would be received from the Government by way of subsidy. Of the £lOOO to be found, the Waitotara and Wanganui County Councils would each contribute £175. The chairman, Mr. A. H. Collin.,, said that personally he favoured the erection of a town hall as a centennial memorial because Wanganui ua. sadly lacking such a facility. The only trouble was that a suitable toon hall would be a very costly mainland the council’s share would much more than £175. Cr. McGregor said that a town hall would cost in the vicinity of £60,00<). The suggestion that the erection ol a bridge in the county would provide a much more suitable memorial was advanced by Cr. T. Mitchell, who said that the council's share of £175 of the cost of the winter garden was much too high on a population basis. It was pointed out, however, that the Wanganui City Council would have the additional expense of maintaining the garden after it. was provided.
