ROADS AND BRIDGES

WANGANUI COUNTY ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer, Mr. R. R. Dawson, reported as follows at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui County Council on the work carried out during the month: — No. 50 Highway.—Work on the reconstruction and sealing of this highway will probably be commenced at an early date. Mangamahu Road.—Metal maintenance repairs have been commenced for which grit is being obtained from Polson’s pit and the completion will probably be effected by the end of this month.

Maingamahu Creek Road. The water tunnel near Craigdean has been completed and the construction of a road filling will be commenced next month. Improvement work by way of widening this road at the top end is being continued and good progress is being made.

Wangaehu Valley Road. —This road is in reasonably good repair and several narrow portions are being widened to improve visability. The driving of a water tunnel has been commenced at Taipo Creek for the purpose of replacing the bridge with a filling. Upper Wangaehu Valley Road.— Metal maintaintence is being effected for which grit is being obtained from Greaves Pit.

Fields Track.—A new metal pit has been opened on Collier's property from which metal will be obtained for repairing this road. Three cattlestops have been placed on this road, and the remainder will be placed in position next week. Parihouhou Roads. —The contractor is making good progress with the metalling of the Parihouhou and Te Komai Roads. Approximately half the quantity of metal being delivered to date. The Mangahowhi Road has recently been reformed by the use of the power grader. Wanganui River Roads.—Themetailing on the contract on the Morikau Road is being carried out and, under favourable conditions, should be completed this month. Otaranoho Road is in fair condition. Clearing and widening work is being carried out on the Matahiwi Road. Although this road has been open for vehicular traffic for some months .there is still a considerable amount of repair work yet required to be done. Makirikiri Valley Road.—This road has been reshaped by the power grader and metals repairs have been partially effected which work is being continued. The Makirikiri stream is being cleared and widened at various places with good effect. Okoia Roads—All drainage work has been completed in this district. The general alignment of the Long Acre Road is being improved at various places by widening. The roads generally will be reshaped by the use ofthe power grader as soon as opportunity offers.

Kaitoke Roads.—These roads generally are in fair condition. Metal repairs have been made on the Warrengate Road and surface repairs will be made on the Paure and Concord Roads at an early date.
