HAZLETT CUP DAY
| RACING AT WINGATL’I I DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB fields and prospects The failure of Royal Chief to gain a place in the Dunedin Cup on Thursday, the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Cfcib's autumn meeting, was a costly blow to investors. He had been galloping well for some time before the meeting and his form was too bad to be true. The race, his first since the spring, shoula benefit him a lot. The winner was Queen of Song, who completely overshadowed her opposition and has at last come back to her best old form.
Queen of Song just raced away with the Dunedin Cup at the finish. She lay in behind Argentic till approaching the straight, but once there she showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition. After her win in the Midsummer Handicap she was expected to be more in demand and she returned her supporters a \ery acceptable dividend for a win. On’this and last Saturday's form there seems every reason to claim that she has made a comeback. As a two-year-old she won her first race at Wingatui. Wild Chase came home well but he had no chance of giving the winner the start he did from the top of the straight.* Argentic had to make the pace and it was fairiy fast considering that he was in the lead. The first half-mile __took 52 l-ssec., six furlongs Imin. 17 2-5 sec., the mile Imin. 42 l-ssec.„- and the mile and a-quarter 2min. 7 2-5 sec. Galleon was always covering more ground than what he should have none, but he beat Royal Chief home. Royal Chief was a bad last. Night Wings was beaten with three furlongs to cover. P. Spratt, the rider of the winner, gained his first success in the race afid secured the gold-mounted whip presented for a winning jockey.
Reports from Dunedin state that the weather has improved since Thursday and prospects for to-day, when the meeting concludes, are very bright. The track is much improved. With the Hazlett Cup field numbering five, interest is certain to be maintained, as Royal Chief, Queen of Song, Wild Chase and Top Row will all have friends. A correction regarding the firstday totalisator investments has been telegraphed, these being £21,898, as against £19,961 10s last year. Thus there was an increase of £1926 IGs instead of the decrease first advised. The following may be in request in their respective engagements: - Owhiro Hurdles. - Western Song, Recollection.
