ROTORUA CUP

Good Field Engaged in Cup Race HIGH-CLASS SPRINTERS PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Feb. 10. The fields engaged at the opening to-morrow at Rotorua, of the Rotorua Racing Club’s annual fixture are much better than usual and there seems every justification for the opinion that the financial results accruing on the first day at least will be most satisfactory, always providing that the weather holds good. Much rain has fallen and that has improved the track. Betting will be on the win-and-place system. With 16 engaged in the Rotorua Cup this event is going to be very interesting. This number is going to be out of place on the turning track and the good beginners will have most to say in the decision. King Rey is on top and he has not raced for some time, although he goes well fresh. Cheval de Volee may be able to carry his 9.0 and his ability to go fast from barrier-rise will stand to him. Once he hits the front he will take some overhauling. Kena is going to be a firm fancy, for in addition to having little weight on his back he went well enough at Matamata to suggest that he will be ready for this event.

Sergia has not yet struck the good form she was in last autumn, when she pulled off both the Taranaki and Egmont Cups, even if she did win in the late spring at Whangarei. Her third placing at Ellerslie last Mo.nday week was definitely encouraging, especially as the going was all against her. Te Hai still seems to be beiow this class. Black Musk went a fine race in the Matamata Cup, which he endeavoured to win all the way. He seems to be on the up-grade and at least he may finish in a place. Scotland does not seem to be sufficiently advanced as yet, aaid a much better prospect would be Glen Abb. who nearly won on the second day at Thames. He won the Hack Cup on this track 12 months ago and he can handle the track all right. It is mostly a matter of temperament with him. Star Artist showed up for a bit of the way in the Matamata Cup and she can be still further improved. Miss Appellant may be suited Here with her short sprint at the finish. Anion is a lightweight prospect, and so are Forest Acre, Ureklaw, Dutch Girl and Very Glad. It is a nice field of its kind, with the issue left to Kena and Sergia.

Good Class in Sprint. As in the case of the Cup, the sprint too has drawn a much better class field than usual, and this will furnish another interesting contest. Llangollen is good and she will need to pull out her very best to win under her poundage, although she won at Paeroa in the spring under 9.7. Palasite reads better. She has now some weight to carry too, but she won twice at Ellerslie six weeks ago under 7.2 and 7.10 and the scale here is half a stone higher. Rollicker, Tooley Street (who may be troubled by the turning track and short run-in), Mon Acre, Tosh, Galilee, Noitaro, Royal Dance and Valideen are possibilities, but Palustre appeals most. The minor events have filled very well also and they should be productive of keen racing. Inquisitor seems to be a good prospect with 191 b. above the minimum after being second twice at Ellerslie at Christmas among the good hacks with 8.4 and 8.9 (111 b. and 161 b. over the minimum respectively). As he stays very well he ought to account fo his many opponents in the Pohutu High-Weight. The Waimangu Stakes is one of those weight-for-age maiden affairs and in this Royal Message, second to Bron wen at Ellerslie last Monday week, and Devon may be the best.

Valdene comes from a stable that usually wins a race or two at this course and she should be hard to beat in the Mokoia Hack. Royal Abb must be given a royal chance in a weak field in the Hot Springs Handicap, or the Geyser Hack if he is reserved for ln the latter event Aynho also reads well after an easy victory at Thames. That was her first success but the manner in which

she left the fiel dat the end was Impressive. Mintlaw is most favourably placed in the Ar.ffva Park Stakes, and the speedy two-year-bld Heroic Maid will have to do her best to beat him at level weights. The following should be worthy of support to-morrow: — Pohutu High-Weight. Inquisitor, Long Span, Ngakaru. Waimangu Stakes.—Royal Message. Bulwark. Devon. Mokoia Hack. Valdene, Silver Eagle, Ohmaha. Rotorua Cup.—Kena, Sefgia, Black Musk. Hot Springs Handicap.—Royal Abb, Pasture. Vai Lee. Geyser Hack.—Aynho, British Banner, Pungshot. Arawa Park Stakes. Mintlaw, Heroic Maid. Fils de Vaals. Tourist Handicap.—Palustre, Valimeen, Mon Acre. Following is the list of acceptors:— 12.15: TOHUTU HIGH-WEIGHT.
