NEW UMBRELLAS

CLEANING OF FABRIC APPLICATION OF OIL The newest umbrellas, made of gaily-coloured oil silk, have one disadvantage. and that is that they become soiled soon and are difficult to clean. The smuts brought down with the rain that alight on the umbrella adhere obstinately and have to he rubbed hard before they will disappear, which may damage the fabric. If the umbrella is treated with an application of a little olive oil on a soft cloth it will not only preserve the fabric, but it will obviate the necessity of any rubbing, as the oil prevents the dirt from getting into the silk. After use in the rain the umbrella is simply wiped over with a clean, dry cloth. A little petroleum jelly rubbed on the metal parts will prevent them from rusting and make them work easily.

The light-coloured umbrella soon becomes soiled if left uncovered in the umbrella-stand when not in use. A sheath for it should be made from a sheet of stout paper.
