OHAKUNE STOCK AGENT

PROPOSAL TO ESTABLISH SALES (Own Correspondent) OHAKUNE, Feb. 7. A representative of one of the leading stock agents waited on the Ohakune Borough Council with the purpose of establishing a stock sale in Ohakune. Ohakune’s situation is ideal for such a purpose as it is the most central of the Waimarino and, being practically on the Main Trunk line, from the general economic point of view the holding of sales here should also prove beneficial as it will lend itself to a decided economy in the use of railway rolling stock. At present the sales are held in Raetihi, which is connected to the Main Trunk line by a branch line. The holding of sales in Ohakune will save the farmers from the back country a great deal of time as at present it takes some of them two days’ droving to get their cattle to the Raetihi sale. The establishment of stock sales, together with the large scale of market gardening now carried on in the district, marks a further step of progress for Ohakune as last year approximately 5000 tons of vegetables were railed away. It is proposed to hold the first sale on Tuesday, 14th of this month.
