RED CROSS SOCIETY
BRANCH FORMED AT TAIHAPE (Own Correspondent) TAIHAPE, Feb. 17. A public meeting convened by His Worship the M|yor, Mr. L. B. H. de Lautour, was held in the Council Chambers on Friday evening for the purpose of considering the formation of a Taihape branch of the Red Crass Society. The Mayor occupied the chair and explained the object of the meeting. Mr. Ira J. Bridger, of Eltham, was present and outlined the history and objects of the society. He stated that it had been functioning in New Zealand as a national movement for eight years, and, as it grew, was meeting with great success. He explained that the society did not clash with that useful organisation—the St. John Ambulance—but worked with it. The St.
John movement, however, was an Empire affair, while the Red Cross was international. It trained men and women in home nursing, first aid, hygiene and sanitation. The subscription was 2s 6d and for juniors one penny. Mr. Bridger stressed the necessity for the enlargement of membership for such a worthy object. On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to form a local branch of the Red Cross Society, and the following committee was elected with power to add: Rev. J. C. Abbott, Messrs. L. B. H. de Lautour, W. G. Holloway, Mesdames A. G. Glenny, E. A. Abbott. Speedy, Misses R. Smith, P. Watt. It was decided to hold a further meeting at a later date. Miss P. Watt was elected secretary.
