PATEA BOXING ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING SUCCESSFUL YEAR PASSED (Own Correspondent) PATEA, Feb. 7. The past year had been the most successful they had had, said Mr. F. Ramsbottom presiding at the annual meeting of the Boxing Association on Monday. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £43 14s, which was £5 better than the previous year. It was decided to place on record the work of the secretary, Mr. W. Brosnan, and to grant him an honorarium of £5.

“It was through the work of our secretary,” said the chairman, “that the Taranaki championships were so well run in Patea last year, and Taranaki must be proud of him. He was first and foremost in working for the sport of boxing.”In the committee's annual report members were congratulated on a successful year’s work. The association held three tournaments, the first showing a profit of £l3 3s, the second a profit of £1 12s, and the third, a professional tournament, resulted in a loss of £2l. The association also staged the Taranaki championships, which showed a profit of £3O, this being forwarded to the Taranaki Boxing Council to be used in defraying the expenses of the Taranaki boys at the New Zealand championships. The membership of the association was 45, as against 40 the previous year. The committee regretted having to record the death of Mr. J. McCarty, one of the pioneers of the association and vice-president since it was formed. His presence at the tournaments would be greatly missed. The association also assisted the Alton Boxing Club to hold the Taranaki junior championships. The country tournaments helped materially to create interest in the sport of boxing in the district. The committee wished to congratulate Bert Madden, of Hawera, on regaining the flyweight championship of New Zealand, also Godfrey Thomas in performing so well in his weight at the New Zealand championships, and Keith Fitzwater, who won the Davies Cup outright. Thanks were due to the vice-presi-dents and members for their generous donations to the funds, Mr. Winchester for donating the Winchester Challenge Cup and all other donors of trophies. Drs Simmons and Graves for their great help during the past season. Mr. Haddow, who acted as referee, the competing boxers and trainers, the ladies who assisted in serving supper to the boxers after the tournaments, the Press for their valuable assistance and all those who assisted the association during the year. The cash handled by the association must constitute a record, the sum of £250 passing through the books this season. Election of officers resulted:—Patron, Dr. W. F. Simmons; president, Mr. F. Francis and Dr. P. V. Graves; secretary, W. Brosnan; hon. surgeons, Drs. W. T. Simmons and P. V. Graves; committee. Messrs. J. Whyte, F. Fitzwater. L. Dombroski. S. Goodwin. B. Anderson, B. Canty; match committee. D. Quickenden. F. Fitzwater and officers ex-officio; hon. auditor. E. F. Hemingway. Members’ subscriptions were fixed at 10s 6d.

It was decided to arrange a tournament on March 13. Although their had been no resolution passed, said Mr. F. Naismith. members of the defunct Wrestling Association had decided the money held by them be handed over to the Boxing Association. The association would be* unable to stage a boxing display at the beach during fitness week, owing to difficulty in erecting a ring, etc.
