PHYSICAL WELFARE WEEK

RAETIHI COMMITTEE MEETS TENTATIVE PROGRAMME ARRANGED. (Special to ‘‘Chronicle.") RAETIHI. Feb. 6. On Friday evening the committee controlling the local arrangements for the observance of the physical welfare week, from February 18 to 25, met at the Borough Council Chambers. His Worship the Mayor (Dr. W. J. Feltham) presided, and the following were also present: Mr. O. D. Bell, Rev. M. Underhill, Rev. Nummy, Messrs. T. Shout, D. P. Scarfe, G. Hunt, J. A. Mcßride, T. S. Fagg, A. Head. C. M. Turner and Miss D. Giddy. His Worship explained that the week was being sponsored by the Government, under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act, 1937, and it was intended to make it an annual event. The meeting discussed a suggestion by Mr. Bell that an attempt be made to teach swimming to adults who were unable to swim. The suggestion was considered an excellent one and it was decided that the local baths be reserved from 5.30 to 6.30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, February 20, 22, 23 and 24, lor this purpose. Rev. Underhill and Messrs. S. Sims and D. Chalmers were mentioned as instructors. No person who can swim will be allowed in th- baths at these times. It is hoped that full advantage will be taken of the scheme. The following tentative programme of events was fixed:— Saturday, February 78.—Cricket match. Sunday, February 19. Special church services, tennis match, bowling match. Monday, February 20.—Physical welfare free picture, arranged by Tramping Club, film to be obtained from Publicity Department. Tuesday, February 21.—Swimming carnival, from 4.30 to 6.30 p.m. Friday, February 24.—School sports. Saturday, February 25. —Waimarino show.

Mr. T. Shout read an article contending that all physical welfare was ultimately traceable to the efforts of the Plunket Society. It was decided to ask the local branch of the Plunket Society to organise a baby competition at the showgrounds on show day, provided no objection was raised by the Waimarino A.P.H. and I. Association.
